We currently have opportunities for Graduate Engineers in Water and Drainage to join our growing teams in either Birmingham Manchester, York, Reading or Bristol.

 The Environmental Services cover a wide range of disciplines including ecology, landscape, climate change adaptation, water resources, flood risk and surface water. This is built on Systra’s history of providing specialisms in mass transit and rail market since 1957 across 80 countries.

This is a role with opportunity for training and career growth in a team with a strong culture of mentoring and support.  As a Graduate within the water team, you will work with Engineers, ecologists, landscape architects and flood risk specialists on a range of projects to deliver outcomes and ensure the needs of the business and our clients are met.

Main Duties

Working as a Graduate within the Water Team you will be responsible for the factual and interpretative input to projects and assignments including planning, task delivery, management of sub-contractors and site works where necessary, scheduling of third party testing where necessary, data assessment and reporting. Typical tasks will include:


  • Completion of Flood Risk Assessments and Drainage Strategies to support planning applications for our clients,
  • Work with project teams to develop project specific solutions in relation to river engineering and surface water drainage.
  • Producing accurate flood risk GIS maps and concept drainage plans.
  • Undertaking Hydraulic modelling.
  • Deliver tasks to the required quality, time and budget
  • Work with other team members and other teams to ensure compliance with both Client and business requirements
  • Plan and prioritise assigned tasks effectively
  • Understand the relationship between hours worked and project cost
  • Contribute to the team’s achievement of Annual Plan by meeting or exceeding personal targets

Knowledge and Skills

  • Relevant degree
  • Knowledge of computer programs to assist design
  • Competent at using Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to learn new skills quickly
  • Having a growth mindset, with a proactive and resourceful approach
  • Be self-motivated, and able to work under pressure
