We currently have an opportunity for an experienced Engineering Management Director to lead our team of Engineering Managers working on major programmes of conventional and high speed rail infrastructure throughout the UK. This role will see the individual provide leadership and direction for the technical development of the team and our projects. This is an opportunity for somebody to shape the delivery of our major programmes of work. The location of the role is flexible but will need to be able to visit our UK offices as required.


This position within our Engineering Management team will suit a committed and ambitious engineer who can demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills combined with commercial awareness and the ability to play their part in growing a dynamic high-performance team.


Main Function of Job:


Provide inspirational Leadership to ‘The Engineering Management Team’:


  • Ensure 3S Principals are embedded across The Practice
  • Leadership of Engineering Management Team input to winning work
  • Ensure effective line management of teams
  • Training, development and mentorship within the people within the Team
  • Resourcing of bids and projects and utilisation/productivity
  • Growth and development of the team to meet the business needs
  • Provide reporting on the technical health of the Engineering Projects
  • Ensure strong collaboration between UK & the wider SYSTRA group to deliver UK and Group goals


Main Duties:


  • Develop a fit for purpose team structure ensuring the required levels of technical skill and behavioural competence are in place to respond effectively to business requirements
  • Ensure the ongoing effectiveness of the Practice through effective recruitment, development and performance management of employees in order to continually increase competency levels and to provide career progression pathways 
  • Develop a robust global collaboration strategy to work with the group to support the growth of the UK Engineering business including onshoring. Eg global mobility of Engineering Managers to support UK deliver
  • Identify the strategic priorities and develop the annual delivery plan for the team in support of the organisations business and financial plans
  • Develop meaningful and value focussed KPI’s which are tracked, reported and reviewed regularly to measure performance
  • Lead a high performing team equipped to deliver to our commitments, ensuring all team members have agreed objectives which are aligned to the Plan and deliver to the required performance standards
  • Ensure the effective and efficient deployment and allocation of resources to projects to ensure excellence in the delivery of projects whilst ensuring achievement of key operational targets through effective review and oversight
  • Ensure teams work collaboratively to achieve high levels of client satisfaction through delivery excellence maximising client relationships to generate sustainable and profitable growth opportunities  
  • Continually review the effectiveness of business procedures to respond to organisational requirements and apply improvements as needed
  • Support The Engineering Management Team to develop client engagement and work winning opportunities
  • Work collaboratively with your peers to ensure successful delivery of the organisations strategic objectives and instil a commitment to collaborative working across the wider organisation.


An important part of the role will include working with the resources across the project – from local resources to others based at other design Technical Centres.




  • Significant high-level Engineering Management experience from complex rail infrastructure environments, ideally in Design Consultancy
  • Degree in suitable Engineering discipline with Chartership status
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills
  • Tenacity, resilience and significant leadership qualities
  • Familiarity with relevant digital engineering software
