We currently have an opportunity for an experienced Engineering Management Director to lead our team of Engineering Managers working on major programmes of conventional and high speed rail infrastructure throughout the UK. This role will see the individual provide leadership and direction for the technical development of the team and our projects. This is an opportunity for somebody to shape the delivery of our major programmes of work. The location of the role is flexible but will need to be able to visit our UK offices as required.


This position within our Engineering Management team will suit a committed and ambitious engineer who can demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills combined with commercial awareness and the ability to play their part in growing a dynamic high-performance team.


The Engineering Management Director will be accountable for the technical assurance of allocated projects ensuring:


  • Technical co-ordination and integration of multi-discipline design inputs through Full project life-cycle through design and implementation to operation
  • Project requirements and are fully met
  • Technically sound design solutions are produced, including all associated reporting and cost estimating, to programme and within budget
  • Constructability, value for money, and innovation are considered at all stages
  • Compliance with all relevant technical standards & legislation
  • Line Management, ensuring advice and guidance is provided for the team, and professional development is actively pursued
  • Good relationships are maintained with all external parties to enhance the reputation of the company including provision of tender / bid inputs to secure future work


Main Duties:


  • Leadership of the Engineering Management team
  • Ownership of the Engineering Management inputs across allocated projects and bids
  • Ensure allocation of suitable Engineering Management resource to our bids and projects
  • Lead the production of Engineering Management Plans for allocated projects
  • Implement systems and procedures to maintain a cost effective, high quality, safe and environmentally responsible approach to design, construction, commissioning and other technical activities on relevant projects, compliant with all relevant legislation
  • Ensure that appropriate engineering controls and procedures are in place across all projects.
  • Ensure that all design and construction contracts include reference to appropriate standards applicable to the projects.
  • Implement processes to manage technical change through design development
  • Apply relevant techniques and procedures of quantified and qualitative risk assessment and HAZOP analysis to all projects and check whether the environmental aspects of all projects are managed in accordance with Environmental Policy.
  • Provide CEM approval of design and AFC submissions
  • Implement effective, value for money and innovative design solutions to meet technical and project requirements
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM Regulations
  • Supervise and mentor team members including all Engineering Managers and Design Managers in the above activities


An important part of the role will include working with the resources across the project – from local resources to others based at other design Technical Centres.




  • Significant high-level Engineering Management experience from complex rail infrastructure environments, ideally in Design Consultancy
  • Degree in suitable Engineering discipline with Chartership status
  • Demonstrable CEM experience
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills
  • Tenacity, resilience and significant leadership qualities
  • Familiarity with relevant digital engineering software
