Technical Excellence is a core pillar for SYSTRA and to support this commitment, the Head of Assurance – Rail Systems will work with our delivery teams in the UK & Ireland, and internationally, to support the continual improvement of our business processes and systems, and provide core expertise across our delivery teams to support the professional development of our people. The role can be based in any of our UK offices with extensive flexible working.


The Head of Assurance – Rail Systems will provide technical leadership and direction to projects and delivery teams at critical phases of a project’s lifecycle.  They will lead and manage technical audits and reviews of our MEP, OLE & Track projects and delivery teams, provide support and direction to continually improve our people, processes, technology and technical delivery and identify and manage technical and safety risks across the business. 


Main Duties:


  • Define, lead and support technical reviews of projects independently and in collaboration with others to ensure design and delivery is technically sound, compliant, safe and in line with our expected quality standards whilst also meeting client expectations
  • Lead and support audit of projects and technical disciplines in collaboration with Professional Heads and Discipline leads to ensure process and procedure is followed, appropriate design assurance is undertaken and technical safety and risk is managed and recorded
  • Support projects in critical phases, such as tender stage, kick-off readiness, solution development, interdisciplinary reviews and construction.   
  • Work with the Project Management lead and Operations Directors to ensure appropriate reviews are planned, undertaken and actions implemented.
  • Identify support and implement effective, value for money and innovative design solutions to meet technical and project requirements
  • Ensure competence is managed and that appropriate authority to work is in place within the technical disciplines and project teams, working with the Professional Heads, discipline leads and HR Learning and Development team
  • Investigate, report and resolve compliance issues that are highlighted through review, or raised from within the business and projects, taking immediate action to deal with any threat to safety
  • Develop and update engineering policies, procedures and process in line with industry

best practice and provide briefings to ensure they are understood and used across the business

  • Ensure the application of appropriate safety controls and technical assurance in production
  • Ensure the implementation of technical standards, guidelines and procedures by cascade through the line
  • Perform hierarchical safety checks and also ensure that each line manager does the same



  • Support the development and growth of technical teams, by ensuring suitable skills and competencies are identified, planned and developed
  • Establish dashboarding and report on a monthly basis to inform the wider management team on technical audit, risks and safety, and advise on and implement improvements. 
  • Represent and promote Systra at industry or technical forums.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM Regulations
  • Support collaboration across our technical teams and wider technical networks across Systra Globally.

Experience Required:

  • Degree level qualified or equivalent in a relevant subject – Civil/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer
  • Accredited Auditor (Desirable)
  • Proven track record in delivering significant infrastructure projects
  • Knowledge of Eurocodes, Network Rail and/or HS2 engineering standards.
  • Knowledge of BIM and collaboration tools
  • Integrity and high professional standards in line with the Engineering council Charted Engineer


  • Exhibit a zero-tolerance approach to unprofessional, unethical or unsafe behaviours
  • Experience of collaborative working relationships
