SYSTRA are looking to expand our Signature Team in the UK, working on high profile infrastructure projects such as Crossrail and HS2, we are building on our 50 years of success in the UK by growing our team and looking for passionate people to deliver projects across our portfolio.


We are now seeking to strengthen and grow our Engineering team in our Birmingham office, initially working as part of our Main Works Civils High Speed 2 project team, by recruiting an Assistant Design Manager.


The Assistant Design Manager will assist the Engineering Management Team for the technical assurance of allocated projects ensuring:

  • Technical co-ordination and integration of multi-discipline design inputs through Full project life-cycle through design and implementation to operation
  • Project requirements are fully met
  • Technically sound design solutions are produced, including all associated reporting and cost estimating, to programme and within budget
  • Constructability, value for money, and innovation are considered at all stages
  • Compliance with all relevant technical standards and legal duties under CDM 2015
  • Good relationships are maintained with all external parties to enhance the reputation of the company


Main Duties

Working in collaboration with our designers and contract partners, the Assistant Design Manager will be involved in a variety of tasks such as:


  • Supporting the Engineering Manager in technical coordination and integration of a multidisciplinary design.
  • Maintain good working relationships with clients and ensure that their requirements are being fulfilled by the business.
  • Be able to adapt to design management challenges and find workable solutions that take into account quality, cost and safety.
  • Ensure that all relevant design standards are being met throughout the design process and liaise with the design teams and Engineering Manager if any issues are identified.
  • Assist in the organisation of design gate reviews throughout the project.
  • Assist in the Management of Engineering schedules and deliverables.
  • Attend standards briefings run by the Engineering Manager and assist if required.
  • Assist in the management of technical change through design, supporting the project Commercial Manager where required.
  • Liaise with clients and ensure their requirements are effectively communicated to the team.
  • Review engineering designs, calculations, and drawings
  • Review contract documents and scheme cost estimates
  • Review technical documents and reports and assist in the preparation of expressions of interest and tenders.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM Regulations.
  • Effective and clear communication to project related correspondence.


Educational Requirements

  • Batchelor-level degree within Engineering or Project Management-based subject
  • Graduate member of ICE or equivalent professional institution membership.




  • Experience of working within a team on a multi-discipline project team and experience of working on tasks that include a variety of interrelated engineering disciplines.
  • Experience or interested in working with international colleagues of different technical cultures



  • Experience of Railway practices and terminology.
  • Knowledge of 3D Model-based project delivery and associated opportunities / constraints




  • Understanding of multi-disciplinary co-ordination across major infrastructure projects.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • A willingness to learn and develop skills to progress in the role.
