SYSTRA are currently hiring a Principal Consultant to join our high performing Movement & Place team within the Consultancy business. This is a unique and diverse opportunity to work particularly with local authorities to deliver sustainable transportation and urban design for the future. The Principal consultant would be involved with a wide range of projects including public realm street design, modelling and community engagement working on multiple projects including high profile support to the HS2 cycleways design and urban integration. Based from our Birmingham office, the role will be fully flexible and balance collaborative time in the office with working from home. Main duties:


  • Strengthen the skills base for the delivery of cycle and walking infrastructure design, network planning, street design, urban design and public engagement.
  • Support coordination and delivery of midlands public sector business development in the areas of walking, cycling, street and public realm design.
  • Lead the delivery of projects to identify networks and design infrastructure for walking and cycling.
  • Lead the development of projects to deliver conceptual street and public realm design
  • Lead the development of sustainable transport strategies.
  • To clearly specify information requirements to both Clients and other Team members, provide prompt responses and work with Clients to understand objectives and outcomes of Projects.
  • To communicate both written and verbally when responding positively to challenges and to challenge others constructively in participating to deliver the desired outcomes of a Project.
  • To develop leadership skills by encourage involvement of, and take responsibility for outputs of, junior staff.
  • To participate in maintaining a positive team spirit by understanding team roles and team dynamics by sharing with others best practices.


Experience required:


  • Significant experience working for a design consultancy and/or local authority design team
  • Understanding of public sector design delivery particularly planning for cycle & walkways (ideally LCWIP work) with a good understanding of Urban Design/Placemaking
  • Relevant degree in either Civil Engineering or Transport Planning
  • Ideally Chartered Member of Institution of Civil Engineers or Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation.
  • Proficiency in AutoCad, GIS, data analysis the Adobe creative suite
  • Traffic Engineering experience
  • Public Sector business development experience
  • Project Management experience
