SYSTRA Consultancy is now recruiting a Principal Transport Planner for its Modelling and Appraisal team. SYSTRA have been appointed to the Travel Demand Management Framework for a major project and are looking for additional project management and technical leadership on TDM and behaviour change projects in an areas with huge investment in the transport system and large-scale events upcoming, particularly the Commonwealth Games. The role can be based from our London or Birmingham offices with extensive flexibility to work from home.

Main Duties:

  • Stakeholder engagement, communications and marketing campaigns.
  • Developing proposals and managing travel demand management projects.
  • Developing junior staff in the acquisiton of TDM and marcomms skills and understanding of behaviour change techniques.
  • Development of marcomms campaigns encouraging more sustainable travel or the shift towards lower carbon modes of transport or working with delivery partners to develop and deliver travel planning advice to businesses, communities and schools.
  • Transport Planning including modelling and economic appraisal;
  • Funding bids, development and/or auditing of business cases.
  • Transportation analysis and the preparation of reports;
  • Prepare fee proposals and manage budgets for individual projects



  • Relevant Degree in engineering, transport planning, economics, mathematics, computer science, geography or other relevant area
  • Relevant post-graduate qualification (e.g. CEng, TPP) would be desirable
  • Broad range of transport planning skills.
  • Good knowledge and experience of sustainable transport, travel demand management and behaviour change including associated marketing and communications.
  • Experience of stakeholder engagement, management and consultation would be ideal.
  • Knowledge and experience of developing marketing and communications plans and material to support behaviour change campaigns. Ideally this might also include experience of social media strategies, graphic design, innovative engagement techniques, good contacts with delivery partners.
  • Confident in client facing roles with experience of project and people management.
  • Good knowledge and experience of appraisal, economics, funding and business cases.
  • Ability to train and oversee junior members of staff
  • Ideally experience in Transport Policy and Strategy.
  • Strategic, practical and creative thinker
  • Proven strong analytic and technical skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential to the role
