Role and responsibilities

The Railway HVAC Engineer will be involved in the design of various systems and components for railway vehicles (passenger cars), including HVAC systems. They will perform analyses, write reports, solve technical problems, and support the designers of railway vehicle systems.

 

Under the supervision of the Team Lead, Mechanical Engineering, the Railway HVAC Engineer will perform the following duties:

  • Carry out studies and write technical reports to solve train operation and reliability problems or other rail vehicle improvements.
  • Develop functional requirements and design specifications.
  • Monitoring and supporting system suppliers throughout the design process: from identification of technical requirements, through design reviews with customers, then qualification testing to commissioning.
  • Select materials and components to meet technical and commercial requirements.
  • Carry out the necessary analysis and calculations to verify and document compliance with customer, safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Define test requirements and procedures.
  • Prepare or validate 3D models.
  • Review and sign off on production drawings and material lists.
  • Participate in first article inspections and testing as required.
  • Participate in the development of technical specifications for locomotives and coaches.
  • Develop manufacturing and installation instructions.
  • Take site measurements and provide technical support for the manufacture and installation of mechanical components or systems.
  • Translate technical documents.

 

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.

Years of experience: 8 to 12 years of relevant experience in mechanical design (design of 3D models and drawings) as well as with HVAC systems of vehicles, trains, or buses

Technical competencies:

  • Member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, or eligible.
  • Experience with light rail (LRV or metros) a strong asset.
  • Experience with electrical and communication systems is an asset.
  • Experience in supporting a production team.
  • Experience in metalworking shops or good knowledge of manufacturing techniques.
  • Knowledge of 3D modelling software such as SolidWorks, Inventor or Catia.
  • Knowledge of FRA, APTA, AAR, SAE, ASME, CSA or Transport Canada rail vehicle standards will be considered
  • Willingness to travel within Canada and the United States on occasion (one or two weeks at a time).

Personal & soft skills:   

  • Bilingual (French and English) and good technical writing skills.
  • Ease and efficiency in communication and teamwork.
  • Familiarity with reading fabrication drawings, including welding symbols, dimensional dimensions and tolerancing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
