SYSTRA Canada's Geotechnical Engineer will be responsible for providing geotechnical engineering services related to the construction of railways, roads and other structures. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing geotechnical investigations, analysis, design, verification and proposing geotechnical solutions for design and construction, depending on the geographic and geological context of the project. Given the variety and scope of projects handled by SYSTRA, the Geotechnical Engineer must be able to work in concert with engineers from different disciplines to seek optimal industry-recognized solutions or innovative solutions where appropriate. He must provide assistance and support for all infrastructure projects carried out by the company throughout the world.

 

Tasks and Responsibilities:

The following is a non-exhaustive list of tasks and responsibilities related to the position and is intended as a guide only. 

  • Prepares technical briefs, notes, reports and geotechnical recommendations for design and construction.
  • Prepare proposals, budgets and schedules.
  • Plan, conduct and supervise geotechnical site reconnaissance and investigation;
  • Prepare a geotechnical program.
  • Establish a program for soil characterization, evaluate geologic and subsurface conditions for deep and shallow foundation design.
  • Perform slope stability analyses, seepage analyses and stress and strain analyses. Propose solutions for seepage.
  • Design of shallow and deep foundations.
  • Evaluation and design of MSE retaining walls.
  • Seismic and liquefaction potential assessment.
  • Design and sizing of roadway pavement bodies and railroad track sizing.
  • Develop specifications and estimates for materials and construction.
  • Embankment evaluation and design, settlement analysis and recommendations.
  • Work with other SYSTRA Canada engineering disciplines to provide services to existing and potential clients, and actively participate in local, regional and global collaborative opportunities.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, client contacts, suppliers, contractors, engineering consultants and external agencies.

 

Qualifications:

  • Over 15 years of practical geotechnical engineering experience in design and construction in Canada.
  • Demonstrated experience with soft, highly compressible and liquefiable soils in seismically active areas and knowledge of permafrost phenomena in the north.
  • Member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ).
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong safety record.
  • Availability for short term travel.
