Job Description

The Lead Mechanical Engineer will supervise a team of mechanical engineers and will oversee projects related to mechanical systems and components for railway vehicles such as locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars and maintenance equipment. He will oversee the analysis, report writing, technical problem solving and structural design of railroad structural vehicles.


Under the supervision of the director, the Lead Mechanical Engineer duties will involve the following:

  • Supervise the work of a team of mechanical engineers.
  • Follow-up and report on the department’s activities.
  • Perform studies and write technical reports for the resolution of train operational and reliability problems or other rail vehicle improvements.
  • Perform analyses and calculations necessary to verify and document compliance to customer, safety and regulation requirements.
  • Develop testing requirements and procedures.
  • Review and sign production drawings and lists of materials.
  • Participate to first article inspections and testing activities.
  • Participate to development of locomotive and passenger car specifications.
  • Develop manufacturing and installation instructions.
  • Take on-site measurements and provide shop technical support for the manufacturing and installation of mechanical components or systems.


Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Minimum twenty years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering, including five years in team and personnel management.
  • Experience in the railway or transportation industry, especially with passenger cars.
  • Member of the OIQ.
  • Member of professional associations in other provinces is an asset.
  • Bilingual English and French: spoken and written.
  • Effective communication skills, spoken and written.
  • Ease and efficiency for staff and team management.
  • Ease in reading manufacturing drawings, including welding symbols and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Experience in metal working shop or good knowledge of manufacturing techniques.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and SolidWorks.
  • Knowledge of FRA, APTA, AAR or Transport Canada standards pertinent to rail vehicles.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Availability to travel for short periods of time (10 % of the time maximum).
