job summary

The incumbent and their team will be responsible for all electrical aspects of rolling stock projects. The Director will supervise the team of supervisors, engineers, technicians, draftsmen and other electrical experts in the division. They are responsible for the specifications and estimates for the clients. In executing mandates, they must ensure that all designs meet railway norms, Systra standards, and client/project manager requirements. They will keep SYSTRA electrical standards up to date.

 

The Director will be responsible for supporting the supervisors in the distribution of workload to the team, monitoring projects, meeting deadlines, prioritizing tasks, and respecting hours. They may have to follow up with suppliers, in the workshop and at the client's premises, both in execution and final validation and testing.

 

The Director will also have the important responsibility of contributing to the development of the electrical group's business by strengthening the group's positioning in order to maintain growth in North America and internationally.

 

 

Role and responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Rolling Stock, the Director, Electrical Engineering will be responsible for the overall electrical group and will perform the following tasks:

 

Technical supervision:

  • Follow up on the activities of the entire electrical group, directly or through the supervisors;
  • Follow-up with other departments: mechanical, structural, project management;
  • Supervise the development of design models;
  • Supervise the development of installation and testing procedures;
  • Supervise the development of installation and testing procedures;
  • Follow-up on site or in the workshop for the fabrication and installation of electrical components or systems, when necessary;
  • Supervise the technical writing of specifications.

 

Business Development:

  • Actively contribute to the development of business and the search for new clients and projects for the electrical group;
  • Be on the lookout for and identify business opportunities;
  • Initiate and maintain relationships with existing and potential clients;
  • Participate in the development of business plans including positioning strategies;
  • Participate in the preparation and validation of technical proposals;
  • Drafting terms of tenders and contracts;
  • Negotiate and conclude contracts.

 

Qualifications

The candidate should possess Electrical Engineering technical expertise on a variety of types of Rolling Stock (Electric Multiple Units, passenger coaches, diesel and/or electric locomotives), their required maintenance as well as operational parameters. This experience should include being an active part of a major overhaul project, on either locomotives or EMUs.

The candidate should be able to support SYSTRA Canada’s clients during the inspection, design, manufacturing, reconditioning, renewal and testing procedures. They should possess relevant experience in design and be familiar with the industry standards applicable to the Rolling Stock procurement and refurbishment.

Specific types of expertise that would be beneficial to the role include:

  • Propulsion systems;
  • Auxiliary electrical systems and controls (battery, lighting, HVAC, doors);
  • Train control and monitoring system/on-board diagnostics;
  • HEP (Head End Power System) transformer/converter system;
  • Driving cabs/controls;
  • Familiarity with F59 locomotives is an advantage.

 

Education: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering

 

Years of experience: 15+ years of relevant experience (including technical and business responsibilities), including 5 years in a team management position;

 

Technical competencies:

  • Membership in the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) is essential;
  • Membership in professional associations in other provinces is an asset.
  • Significant experience in the railway or transportation industry;
  • Good knowledge of the North American market;
  • Experience in project management;
  • Ability to produce and understand technical drawings;
  • Good knowledge of electrical diagramming software: ePLAN, See Electrical or others;
  • Good knowledge of electrical and transportation standards: CSA, IEEE, SAE, APTA, FMVSS, FRA;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel office software.

  • Bilingualism, required (French, English).
  • Ability to manage projects;
  • Significant interpersonal skills;
  • Organized and professional in approach;
  • Ability to work in a team and engage members;
  • Willingness to travel within Canada and abroad for short periods to support projects.
