Role and responsibilities

Acts as technical lead for rolling stock studies, procurement, and maintenance projects as well as for rolling stock maintenance facilities design and maintenance equipment acquisition projects.

May also act as project manager on assigned rolling stock projects, with the objective of ensuring that the delivered results meet and surpass the customer’s expectations and project profitability targets are met.

Prepares technical and financial proposals for the assigned rolling stock projects.

Project Work

Will be called on to lead or participate in different types of projects which may include studies, rolling stock and shop equipment procurement projects as well as maintenance facility design. More specifically, the work will consist of:

  • Studies: Conduct studies to define client needs and to elaborate solutions meeting their requirements (scoping, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, preliminary design and detailed design).
  • Lead or participate in the design of solutions submitted to the client, including the preparation of reports and the preparation and validation of designs.
  • Procurement: Lead or participate in the preparation of technical specifications and tender documents for the acquisition of rolling stock or shop equipment. Lead or participate in the entire procurement process by providing assistance to the Client during the tender process, performing bid analysis, performing inspections during fabrication, including factory and acceptance tests and equipment commissioning.
  • Rolling stock maintenance and maintenance facilities: Responsible for making maintenance recommendations and for sizing and for performing the functional design of rolling stock maintenance facilities and specifying workshop equipment. Works closely with the team of architects and engineers from other disciplines assigned to the project.
  • Develops rolling stock-related systems, tools and data to enhance the efficiency of project execution.
  • Project Management: Initiates the project through its start-up phase by mobilizing staff, contacting the customer and establishing the basic needs of the project.
  • Monitors progress, project schedule, supervise staff and provides technical guidance.
  • Ensures project expenditures are compliant with established budgets.
  • Follows up on the client invoicing progress and payments.
  • Preparation of proposals prepares rolling stock related proposals and their pricing. Works closely with marketing and other specialists on an as required basis


Internal and External Relationships:

  • Works closely with other rolling stock engineers and technicians, and with co-workers from other business units with the purpose of developing/writing winning proposals and upon award, executing projects in an efficient manner.  
  • Interacts with other departments within the organization as well as with clients and suppliers in a professional way.
  • Acts as rolling stock expert on domestic and international projects and studies, providing advice to co-workers.
  • Writing high-quality reports is an integral part of this position.


  • Client Relations/Marketing Responsibilities: Maintains direct contact with the client, ensures client satisfaction and follow-up work. Seeks new business opportunities with current and potential clients.



Education: An engineering degree, preferably in mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering, is the minimum requirement for this position. Any additional degrees in other disciplines such as administration, business or management would be an asset.  

Years of experience: Minimum of 10 to 15 years of experience in the design, manufacturing or maintenance of North American diesel freight or passenger locomotives, freight wagons and passenger rolling stock. Relevant experience in the functional design of rolling stock maintenance facilities and in the specification of maintenance equipment.

Technical competencies:

  • Membership in the ‘Ordre des Ingenieurs du Quebec’ is also a requirement.
  • Relevant experience in the functional design of rolling stock maintenance facilities and in the specification of maintenance equipment.
  • Experience with light rail vehicles, electric locomotives, and track maintenance equipment is an asset. Overseas consulting experience in rolling stock projects is an asset. Relevant experience may be considered equivalent.

Personal & soft skills:   

  • French and English - Both written and spoken. Any additional language would be an asset.
  • Must have aptitudes for teamwork on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Must be able to work independently, sometimes under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Must be proficient at writing clear technical reports and proposals.
  • Must be willing to travel both domestically and internationally for short-term assignments.
  • Must show leadership and grow the business.
