Role and responsibilities

  • Technical evaluation and selection of appropriate technologies and systems. Prepares and delivers reports for the client (customer).
  • Calculates CAPEX based on the technologies and system proposed as well as annual OPEX for the system to be installed.
  • Conducting feasibility study followed by the preparation of design criteria and specifications for the system proposed.
  • Prepare and evaluate tenders (bids) submitted by potential contractors.
  • Responds to tender offers received by the client.
  • Supervises the contractor and supports the customer during the system design and installation implementation phases.
  • Assists in the Testing and Commissioning of the system. Evaluates the operational performance of the system.
  • Leads and develops bid estimates and schedules for Wayside Signaling and Office Hardware (HW) to meet customer requirements.
  • Leads the prompt escalation of issues, impacts of issues and recommendations/solutions to Functional Manager for resolution.
  • Effectively communicates project status, proposes risk mitigation.
  • Review (check) of supplier’s documents and drawings and verification of compliance to contract requirements and applicable standards.
  • Ensuring design compliance through requirements traceability.
  • Responsible for producing functional design documentation including system requirements and architecture, interface control, scheme plans, control tables, block design, and analyses as appropriate.

 

Internal and External Relationships:

  • Internal:  Must interface with all departments and be familiar with all systems within SYSTRA.
  • External: Must be familiar with Government and Regulatory procedures.  Must be able to interface with Owners, operators, consultants and contractors, as well as the suppliers of signalling systems.

 

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Automation or Software Engineering from a recognized university

Years of experience: A minimum of 15 years in railway and transit signalling systems, preferably with a major railway company

 

Technical competencies:

  • Expert understanding of the functional and operational requirements of the signalling systems.
  • Expert in systems processes and design, theoretical timing analysis, operational scenarios, reliability and performance analysis.
  • Safety-oriented, a good understanding of the vital principles. Capable to identify safety-related hazards considering system failure analysis.
  • Good knowledge of North American signalling systems: Conventional Rail Signaling, PTC, CBTC.  Knowledge of ETCS, an asset.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from PMI, an asset.
  • Deep knowledge of industry standards (e.g. CENELEC, AREMA, IEEE, IPC, etc.) and industries standards and application of Safety standards in the design.
  • Deep understanding and knowledge of the design life cycle and V-Model in application Safety and mission critical systems.
  • Ability to analyze and refine systems requirements and ability to manage large complex projects independently.

 

Personal & soft skills:   

  • Exceptional organizational skills, excellent communication skills (oral and written), active listening and adapts well to target audience;
  • French is a strong asset.
  • Responsible and dynamic.
  • Ability to adapt to both new and different environments.
  • Problem solver.
  • Located in Canada and able to travel around the world.
  • Acceptable for short-term and medium overseas posting.
  • Expert problem solving, planning and analytical skills.
