Overall responsibilities

Responsible for the preparation and writing of studies, technical specifications design, installation, testing and revenue service commissioning of signaling systems on conventional railways. Also in charge of inspection of crossings to assess compliance with regulations and standards/guidelines

 

Role and responsibilities

  • Technical evaluation and selection of appropriate technologies and systems. Prepares and delivers reports for the client (customer).
  • Calculates CAPEX based on the technologies and system proposed as well as annual OPEX for the system to be installed.
  • Conducting feasibility study followed by the preparation of design criteria and specifications for the system proposed.
  • Prepare tenders (bids) documents for customers.
  • Supervises the contractor/supplier and supports the customer during the system design and installation implementation phases.
  • Assists the Testing and Commissioning of new equipment. Evaluates the operational performance of the system.
  • Visual inspections of existing crossings and associated signalling and telecom equipment.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in electrical or software engineering.

Years of experience: A minimum of 5 years in railway and transit signaling systems, preferably with a major railway company.

Technical competencies:

  • Must have a practical design experience of railway control signals.
  • Experience in understanding of the functional and operational requirements of the signaling systems.
  • Experience in systems processes and design, theoretical timing analysis, operational scenarios, reliability and performance analysis.
  • Safety oriented, good understanding of the vital railway control principles. Capable to identify safety related hazards considering railway system failure analysis.
  • Good knowledge of AREMA standards. Familiarity with CENELEC, IEC, and IEEE standards is a plus.
  • Good knowledge of North American signaling systems: Conventional Rail Signaling, PTC, CBTC.  Knowledge of ETCS is a plus.
  • Fluency in French and functional level of English in order to be able to work closely in collaboration with stakeholders in Ontario.

Internal and External Relationships

  • Internal:  Must interface with all departments and be familiar with all systems within SYSTRA.
  • External: Must have knowledge of Class 1 railroad signaling systems and equipment. Must be able to interface with Owners, operators, consultants and contractors, as well as the suppliers of signaling systems.
