Role and responsibilities

Under the responsibility of the Manager, Structural Engineering, the Senior Structural Engineer will have the following main responsibilities:

  • Visit factories to inspect and design repairs for damaged cars;
  • Support production as needed;
  • Perform engineering calculations in body structure;
  • Seal engineering plans and calculation reports;
  • Perform manual calculations of thin sheet metal cladding structures and welded steel assemblies of a railway vehicle;
  • Perform manual calculations of allowable stress in coated structures working in thin sheet metal using the Flabel, Bruhn, Niu methods;
  • Review structural test results;
  • Correlate the results of the analysis with the test results;
  • Evaluate fatigue using typical industry methods;
  • Prepare freebody diagrams - balance diagrams of car structural parts;
  • Provide technical support to the structural team:
    • Suggestion of standards and calculation methods to use;
    • Brainstorming on anticipated failure modes;
    • Verification of the methodology;
    • Checking models and drawings;
    • Verification of team calculations;
    • Review and approval of reports;
    • Coaching of engineers and candidates to the engineering profession;
    • Provide ad-hoc technical advice to other SYSTRA teams.
  • Perform technical specification reviews;
  • Participate in writing technical specifications;
  • Participate in business development efforts;
  • Participate in writing proposals and calls for tenders;
  • Occasionally: Prepare, perform and interpret finite element analyses, preferably using FEMAP V. 11.2, NX Nastran or Nei (Autodesk) Nastran;
  • Occasionally: Use finite element analysis results and manual calculations to verify the safety margins of components and connections.




Education: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.

Years of experience: 15 years of engineering experience, including 10 years of relevant experience in structural calculation and design.


Technical competencies:

  • Experience in the execution, management and interpretation of modal analysis results;
  • A clear understanding of all types of buckling, local, inter-rivet, Euler, crushing, panel buckling;
  • Experience in the railway industry is an asset;
  • Having a good knowledge of data on MMPDS06 or MIL HDBK-5 materials is an asset;
  • Mastering linear and nonlinear static analysis (geometry and materials) is an asset.


Personal & soft skills:   

  • Member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec;
  • The candidate must have a good knowledge of both French and English;
  • The candidate must be able to produce reports and presentations summarizing the analyses performed, in both French and English;
  • The candidate must demonstrate a high degree of autonomy;
