Overall Responsibilities (purpose and objectives)

Provide expert-level track and civil technical expertise to colleagues and clients for the design, construction, and maintenance of railways and associated railway systems.


Specific Responsibilities/Tasks

  • Perform as a discipline lead for all levels of track and civil design work (conceptual to detailed) in mainline and yard projects, including the design of track structure, track alignment (vertical and horizontal), earthworks and drainage.
  • Lead a team of engineers and drafters in the preparation of design drawings for all levels of design (conceptual to detailed).
  • Lead the preparation of engineering documents such as specifications, technical notes, calculation sheets, bills of quantity, cost estimates, work programs, site visit reports, feasibility studies and various other reports.
  • Serve as an expert-level resource for all railway technical matters, in particular, those concerning AREMA recommendations and having the understanding on how to research information and solutions for issues beyond specific experience.
  • Act as the company representative to clients on specific mandates.
  • Manage quality control reviews of all levels of railway design within a project.
  • Work alone or as part of a team and be able to communicate ideas verbally and in writing, in both English and French;
  • Support project management activities as required and requested and provide regular updates to supervisors on the status of projects.
  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals for railway engineering-related RFPs, including formulating methodologies, budgets, schedules and staffing plans.
  • Be able to travel overseas to meet clients and perform engineering work; acting as a specialist in civil/track engineering on site or as a project manager, and this, for an assignment that could last from a few days to several weeks or months.


Internal and External Relations

Internal: Interact with all company employees and provide support for issues related to civil engineering specializing in rail and its associated systems.

External: Develop business relationships with clients, suppliers and other consultants, and rely on this network for ongoing projects and to increase opportunities to retain clientele or acquire new projects.



Knowledge of various railway design software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D), and standards, recommendations, codes and regulations from AREMA, UIC, EN, CN, CP and Transport Canada standards and regulations.


Experience (minimum and desired)

At least 15 years of experience in track, civil or construction engineering positions, with a railway or engineering consulting firm.


Personal and Other Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Member in good standing with the OIQ or able to register.
  • Be familiar with working in a BIM environment.


Education (required)

Bachelor of Engineering


Language Requirements

  • Excellent in English and French, both verbal and written.
  • Third language an asset.
