Main Responsabilities


Under the responsibility of the structural team leader, the structural engineer will have the following main responsibilities:


  • Visit factories to inspect and repair damaged cars;
  • Support production as needed.
  • Perform engineering calculations in body structure;
  • Seal engineering plans and calculation reports;
  • Perform manual calculations of thin sheet metal cladding structures and welded steel assemblies of a railway vehicle;
  • Perform manual calculations of allowable stress in coated structures working in thin sheet metal using the Flabel, Bruhn, Niu methods;
  • Review structural test results;
  • Correlate the results of the analysis with the test results;
  • Evaluate fatigue using stress versus number of cycles or strain versus number of cycles methods;
  • Prepare freebody diagrams - balance diagrams of car structural parts;
  • Occasionally: Prepare, perform and interpret finite element analyses, preferably using FEMAP V. 11.2, NX Nastran or Nei (Autodesk) Nastran;
  • Occasionally: Use finite element analysis results and manual calculations to verify the safety margins of components and connections.


Qualifications required


  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering;
  • Five to ten years of relevant experience in calculation and structural design;
  • Member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (junior membership is suitable);
  • The candidate must have a good knowledge of both English and French;
  • The candidate must be able to produce reports and presentations summarizing the analyses performed, in both English and French;
  • The candidate must demonstrate a high degree of autonomy;
  • Experience in the execution, management and interpretation of Eigenvalue modal analysis results;
  • Clear understanding of all types of buckling, local, interrivet, Euler, crushing, panel buckling;
  • Experience in the railway industry is an asset;
  • Having a good knowledge of data on MMPDS06 or MIL HDBK-5 materials is an asset;
  • Mastering linear and nonlinear static analysis (geometry and materials) is an asset.
