General Description 

The On-Board CBTC Design Lead’s responsibilities will be to provide design and engineering expertise relating to the on-board ATC & CBTC System for retrofit / upgrade projects. Interfaces include operational aspects with other key systems such as the electrical, communications and trackside train control systems.

 

The On-Board CBTC Design Lead will support our customer through the design, fitment and testing and commissioning of CBTC systems by contractors in an operating network; manage the design review process for On-Board subsystems; coordinate design, lab tests and integration with the CBTC Design Lead, CBTC T&C Manager and CBTC Systems Integrator according to the phases of the project.

 

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Lead the Onboard CBTC activities to ensure that finished product is ready for introduction by reviewing and analyzing the needs of the customer specifications for the assigned CBTC projects, with specific analysis of the plans to retrofit existing rolling stock for the new Onboard CBTC/ATC system. 

2. Review and supervise application studies from CBTC suppliers according to the Client requirements: configuration of equipment, functionality and performance of the new ATC systems. 

3. Ensure the coordinator of all stakeholders for the delivery and integration of the On-Board CBTC system

4. Responsible for discipline work quality and methodology and coordination with the other sectors project interface for multi-disciplinary projects.

5. Perform project work including scope, schedule and produce accurate and timely project reporting and client deliverables as required by the Project Manager.

6. Technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating projects, including the investigation, development, and approaches for the project.

7. Actively maintain proficiency and develop knowledge in areas of expertise for him and relevant staff by managing, directing, and mentoring the junior signals, CBTC, and train control staff assigned to his project.

8. Frequent interaction with supervisor and staff including meetings as necessary to confirm with discipline personnel that projects are on track within budget and meet client expectations and deadlines.

9. Ensure engineers/designers are following and carrying out work under correct and relevant federal, state, local, and industry standards. 

10. Analyze and review the design and construction drawing requirements to ensure match with customers' specifications.

11. Enforce QA/QC policies for his assigned scope of work and identify possible quality and safety issues within the scope of the project in order to fulfill project-related contractual requirements.

12. Work with other team members or, as individual researcher and consultant, may be assisted on individual projects by other engineers and technicians.

13. Actively maintain proficiency and develop knowledge in areas of expertise.

14. Willingness and ability to travel nationally and internationally to all SYSTRA office locations, including project offices, and contractors and suppliers' offices and factories, if applicable

Organiational relationships: 

1Accountable for all phases of activities to the Project Manager of project assigned and to Systems Sector Leader.

2. Consults and coordinates with:

  • All employees assigned to the sector and other disciplines as required.
  • Othe Systems Engineers and Managers to coordinate multi-discipline projects and exchange intelligence about clients and competitors. 
  • Peer level employees of clients, teaming partners, competitors, SYSTRA, S.A and its subsidaries, vendors, brokers, and others as may be required to conduct the company's business. 

 

WORK EXPERIENCE

1. Comprehensive understanding of the architecture of the on-board CBTC system and interfaces with rolling stock (mechanical, electrical, functional, software)

2. In-depth knowledge of Communications Based Train Control (CBTC)

3. Minimum of 10 to 15 years of relevant experience. Experience with CBTC suppliers.

4. Knowledge of the Federal Railroad Administration rules and AREMA standards

5. Experience in lead engineer or team management position, with client facing experience. 

6. Recognized as an authority in the field.

7. An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques is needed relating to all aspects of train control systems and specifically with On-Board CBTC systems

 

EDUCATION & LICENSES

1. BS or MS in relevant Engineering field

2. PE License in relevant state (mainly NY; CA) - desirable

3. CSEP, CISSP, CCNA, SSCP, or other applicable certifications - desirable

4. Leadership role or membership in a relevant professional organization - desirable
