  1. Technical Duties & Responsibilities:
    • The primary role of this position is to prepare design drawings and documents, technical specifications, proposals, calculations, and studies associated with traction power system projects for electrified railways.
    • Prepare test plans, field tests, reports, analysis, and technical studies for traction power systems, including train performance simulations, ac and dc load flow simulations, short-circuit calculations, grounding and bonding studies, EMF/EMI studies, and protective relay settings and coordination studies.
    • Prepare electrical design documents for traction power systems in accordance with AREMA railway standards, the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), the National Electrical Safety Code (IEEE C2), and other applicable US and railroad-specific design standards.
    • Manage project work including scope, schedule, budget, and reporting.
    • Lead other engineers, designers, and drafters and be responsible for project quality, execution, and interfacing with clients.
    • Witness testing and commissioning activities.
    • Actively maintain proficiency and knowledge in traction power equipment and designs.
    • Perform site investigations and walkdowns in high-voltage substations and along electrified railroads.

 

  1. Required Experience & Competencies:
    • Must hold a bachelor of science in electrical engineering (BSEE) degree from an ABET accredited educational program.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain a professional engineering (PE) licenses in various states in the United States.
    • Must have experience with the design, installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical power systems.
    • Must have knowledge of electrified railway substation and power distribution system designs, including rectifiers, transformers, cables, circuit breakers, surge arresters, catenary, third rail, and protective relaying equipment.
    • Must have a working knowledge of industry standards associated with railway design and operation.
    • Have knowledge of the mathematical theory regarding ac and dc load flow simulations, short-circuit calculations, and protective relay coordination studies.
    • Must have 15+ years of relevant experience.

 

 

  1. Desired Experience, Competencies & Education:
    • A master of science degree in electrical engineering (MSEE) degree is preferred.
    • Knowledge of utility system operation and design is preferred.
    • Experience using traction power system simulation software.
    • Experience using electrical distribution modeling software such as ETAP, PSS/E, SKM PowerTools, EMTP-RV, and PSPICE.
    • Traction power experience with 750 V dc third rail and overhead; 12 kV ac, 25 Hz, 2 x 12.5 kV ac, 60 Hz, 2 x 25 kV, 60 Hz.
