We currently have an opportunity for an Assistant Civil Engineer to join our Engineering team in either our Reading, Birmingham or Bristol offices. This position within our engineering team will suit a committed and ambitious Engineer who can demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills combined with the ability to play their part in a dynamic high-performance team. The role requires presence in the Reading office, however Systra are adopting a hybrid working arrangement going forward which allows significant flexibility to work from home several days a week.

The Assistant Engineer will work with a team of Engineers producing the design delivery of allocated Projects as instructed by the projects Lead Engineer.


Main Duties

The Assistant Engineer’s main duties will be the production of designs as instructed by the projects Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) and or Lead Engineer and to be responsible for:

  • Ensuring designs are completed to meet CRE/Lead Engineers requirements.
  • Ensuring designs are completed to the timescales agreed with the CRE/Lead Engineer.
  • Planning the allocated design works to meet the agreed timescales.
  • Identify changes to the projects client requirements and raise the changes with the CRE/Lead Engineer.
  • Flexibility in working hours will be required to meet the demands of the role
  • Ability to travel to client sites and other SYSTRA offices will be required.


Experience Required

  • This role requires a good understanding of CSM/CDM regulations and requirements. (internal training will be provided.)
  • Experience in the use of MicroStation and Bentley Design Software.
  • Good communication and presentation skills.
  • A self-motivated team player able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Able to build and maintain good relationships with engineers from other internal discipline teams to promote good inter-discipline working relationships and a “One Team” ethos.
  • Able to undertake overseas assignments where required.
