Role summary

The Design Management Lead will be responsible at program-level for managing and leading design progress, schedules, scoping, change and issue resolution:

  • Initially investigate design processes and procedures used by various projects within the Program.
  • Adopt a cost effective, high quality, safe and environmentally responsible approach to design, construction, commissioning with GO Expansion technical requirements.
  • Liaise with technical experts to ensure designs are buildable and represent value for money.
  • Liaise with the wider program team to ensure consistency and quality of deliverables across all projects and help establishing a ‘right first time’ culture across the PDT to ensure the most efficient delivery of the Program.
  • Oversee the implementation of effective, value for money and innovative design solutions to meet technical and project requirements.
  • Delivery of work to schedule, budget and specification.
  • Training and development, mentoring of junior staff.
  • Contributing to long term technical development of the PDT by application of new techniques, procedures and practices.
  • Integrate designs spread across the full life-cycle and covering all disciplines involved in railway infrastructure and systems.
  • Ensure compliance of the designs in accordance with the project requirements and the design contracts.
  • Develop and implement safe by design processes and procedures, ensuring robust identification, mitigation and communication of hazards.
  • Work with the rest of the design team to ensure designs are coordinated and interfaced across projects and disciplines.
  • Ensure sustainability is at the heart of Program process and decision making to ensure the right decisions are made now and for the future.
  • Develop processes and identify value engineering savings within the project designs.
  • Facilitate a project environment which is inclusive, diverse and celebrates our differences.
  • Create a high performing culture open to constructive challenge, seeking continual improvement and implementing lessons learnt.

 

Qualifications

Education: Degree qualified within a relevant engineering discipline

Technical Competencies:

  • Demonstrates leadership and core competencies at a high level of development and is an exemplary model of living the corporate Values and Code of Ethics.
  • Provides senior leadership and direction over an integrated team, oversight and indirect supervision of staff in a matrix environment; delivers timely feedback to ensure a cohesive operational unit and the optimum use of team skills; monitors work assignments for adherence to timelines and compliance with policies and processes; develops and implements action plans to address performance gaps.
  • Provides senior leadership in the area of assurance management to program management leads that are dedicated to each of the program delivery units.
  • Experience of managing the coordination of multidisciplinary teams on major infrastructure projects.
  • Experience managing design delivery programme.
  • Broad Rail Engineering experience gained on brownfield infrastructure projects.
  • Working experience with Common Data Environments and BIM software
