We currently have an opportunity for an Assistant Engineer (CDM) to join our growing Systems team in York. This position will suit an experienced Engineer who wants to take their knowledge and practical application of the Construction (Design and management) Regulations 2015 one step further in a development and supporting role to a key Project within Systra’s portfolio.

The Assistant Engineer shall provide vital support to both the HS2 Project and the internal Systra Systems team.

 

Main Duties

As an Assistant Engineer (CDM) you will be accountable for:

  • Working with Systra and Client Projects to ensure compliance with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 within the Pre-Construction Phase, through the effective supervision and assessment of the design process.
  • Working with the Systra CDM Managers and Principal Designers (CDM) to support their roles.
  • Work with allocated projects to ensure that CDM compliance is maintained.
  • Working with the Systra Systems team to increase your understanding on the practical application of CDM in the design phase with special emphasis on design risk and hazard management, competence and procedural CDM applications
  • Undertaking regular monitoring and inspection of company projects from a CDM perspective to report on levels of compliance and identify lessons learned and opportunities for improvement.
  • Promote effective Design Risk Management throughout the company or allocated project.
  • Assistance and eventual facilitation of Hazard Identification and Hazard Review as well as other CDM focussed workshops and meetings.
  • Provide guidance and Management on issues involving CDM and general construction activities as well as other regulatory requirements relating to SYSTRA portfolio of works (multi-sector construction)
  • Assist the System Safety Team in the working with SYSTRA and Client Projects to ensure compliance with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 Regulations through active review
  • Assist the System Safety Team in the to provide advice on issues involving CDM and participate in Safe by Design initiatives within the company

 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Have an understanding in the successful application and management of CDM in a multi-disciplinary project environment.
  • A NEBOSH Construction (or similar) and/or design Certificate would be preferred
  • Effective communicator with the willingness to learn
  • Able to manage and plan your own workload effectively
  • Able to foster high levels of co-operation and co-ordination between project teams and individual members
  • Able to carry out their duty on both Complex Multi-Disciplinary and Simple projects working alongside existing Systra Designers and external designers where applicable.
  • Ideally membership of or working towards membership of a relevant professional institution e.g. IOSH, ICE, APS
  • Ideally +2 years’ experience within the railway industry working within a design setting.
  • An understanding of engineering design and construction principles and standards (Rail industry an advantage)
  • Experience of general construction activities and methods
  • Good knowledge of engineering design standards for the UK Rail Network and British and European Standards and how they are applied / obtained.
  • Flexibility in working hours will be required to meet the demands of the role
  • Ability to travel to client sites and other SYSTRA offices may be required
