We have an immediate opportunity for an Assistant System Safety Engineer to join our growing systems team in York. This is a great opportunity to join a critical team who are delivering across the largest conventional rail infrastructure projects in the UK. The Assistant System Safety Engineer will provide vital support to both the Systems Manager and Systems Engineers in both Project and internal issues.


Main Duties


As an Assistant System Safety Engineer you will be accountable for:

  • Working with and reporting to the System Safety Manager and team to develop personal skills and level of competence in System Safety both within and external to the Rail environment
  • Assist the System Safety Team in the carrying out of system safety related training packages both internal and external to the company
  • Assist the System Safety Team in the Undertaking of regular monitoring and inspection of company projects to report on levels of compliance and identify lessons learned and opportunities for improvement
  • Assist the System Safety Team in the Promotion of effective Design Risk Management throughout the company
  • Assist the System Safety Team in the facilitation of Hazard Identification, Hazard Review and Hazardous Operations Workshops
  • Provide assistance to the company with regards business development and continual improvement through collaboratively working with other disciplines to enhance Systra’s service delivery and processes.
  • Assist the System Safety Team in the working with Systra's and Client Projects to ensure compliance with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, the Common Safety Method 2012 and the Railway Interoperability Regulations through active monitoring and audit
  • Assist the System Safety Team in the to provide advice on issues involving CDM, CSM* and Interoperability*  as well as other regulatory requirements relating to Systra portfolio of works ( multi-sector construction)

Knowledge and Skills


  • Ability to learn on the go as training will be given in line with work commitments
  • Effective communicator
  • General understanding of requirements and implementation of effective design risk management.
  • Able to manage and plan your own workload effectively
  • Ideally membership of or willingness to work towards membership of a relevant professional institution eg. IOSH, ICE, APS
  • Ideally 2 years’ experience within the railway or general construction industry.
  • Good knowledge of engineering design and construction principles and standards
  • Experience of general construction activities and methods
  • A basic understanding of Common Safety Method and how it is applied in a Rail environment with respect to design and compliance.
  • A basic knowledge of CDM, its application and  its principles
  • A basic knowledge of engineering design standards for the UK Rail Network and British and European Standards
