SYSTRA’s environment, ecology, landscape, water resources, consents and sustainability team are a rapidly growing team of experts in a wide range of design, survey, construction, operation and management services. We serve many different and demanding market sectors including Transportation, Security, Energy & Power, Construction and Industrial. We are responsible for managing environmental and ecological risks and developing and implementing sustainable solutions on major buildings and infrastructure projects throughout the UK.

We are working on some of the UK’s most high-profile rail engineering projects, including High Speed 2 and the East Coast Power Supply Upgrade and with key clients and stakeholders such as Network Rail, Office of Rail Regulators and the Railway Safety and Standards Board.

 

Main Function of Job

To assist the team in supporting the above workstreams in the delivery high quality environmental products to both budget and programme.  The post-holder will assist in the technical excellence of the Environment and Sustainability Team and ensure that the company maintains its legal compliance, ISO14001 accreditation and to perform activities in accordance with all applicable consents.  The post-holder will assist in marketing the products and technical capabilities internally within the business.

 

Main Duties

Duties associated with this post will include:-

  • Provide support in undertaking and managing Carbon Assessments and Consents Compliance elements on a major infrastructure project
  • Work with members of the Environmental Discipline to deliver a range of environmental projects and deliverables, such as; Constraints & Ecological mapping Environmental & Social Management Plans, Site Waste Management Plans, Sustainability Plans, Environmental Risk Assessments etc, plus supporting delivery through sustainability tools such as BREEAM and CEEQUAL assessment etc
  • Assisting in undertaking site-based surveys/audits as well as desk-based assessment and reporting
  • Identifying potential health and safety hazards of specific projects and demonstrating a commitment to your own safety of others
  • Assisting with preparation of contract documents, proposals and work specifications for environmental specialists
  • Communicating and liaising effectively with colleagues and designers
  • Thinking both creatively and logically to resolve design and development problems
  • Assisting Lead Engineers with financial monitoring of projects, document control, progress reporting and other project management tasks.
  • Writing and self–checking of reports and ensuring technical consistency
  • Assisting with the implementation of the Environmental Management System to ISO14001:2015; prepare procedures, legal register, records maintenance

 

Required Experience, Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge

 

  • Masters Degree in relevant subject (desirable not essential)
  • Good Environmental Degree in relevant subject (desirable not essential)
  • Experience in an environmental specialty, such as carbon assessment, noise and vibration, ecology, waste, etc. (desirable not essential)
  • Associate Membership of relevant institution (e.g. IEMA, IEEM, CIWEM, CIWM)
  • Experience using mapping and / or modelling software such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), MicroStation and AutoCAD
  • A working knowledge of project management principles and tools
  • Knowledge of environmental management/assessment and sustainability tools (e.g. BREEAM, CEEQUAL)
  • Knowledge of quality assurance requirements and procedures.
  • Knowledge of commercial processes.
  • Understanding of environmental risk assessment approaches
  • Knowledge of CDM and CSM  with the ability to identify design, construction, operational hazards.
  • A working knowledge of environmental consents and applications process
  • An understanding of availability and application of renewable energy technology
  • Excellent knowledge and practical experience of Microsoft Office

 

Essential Skills

 

  • Flexibility in working hours will be required to meet the demands of the role
  • Ability to work along at home and in the office in a team environment
  • Ability to travel to client sites and other SYSTRA offices will be required
  • Experience – 1 or more years’ experience, ideally from an Environmental Consultancy or Contractor background, is a significant advantage (desirable not essential)
  • Demonstrate working/communication skills - across teams within the company to ensure delivery of projects.  Able to identify links and integrate with the business.
  • Ability to multi-task prioritise and work well under pressure
  • A team player capable of leading and focusing team members to achieve objectives.
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Computer literate
  • Self-motivated team player. Able to work with the minimum of supervision
  • Motivates and develops colleagues to grow in support of the business
