We currently have an opportunity for an experienced Senior Commercial Manager to join our growing commercial team in either our York, Birmingham or Manchester offices, initially working from home with longer term flexibility. This position within our team will suit a committed and ambitious professional who can demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills combined with commercial awareness and the ability to play their part in growing a dynamic high-performance team. With a focus on the design of High Speed and Conventional rail infrastructure they will also support other Product Lines in the UK and overseas, the post-holder will be part of a growing team of specialists delivering projects for a diverse portfolio of UK clients. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a range of practical work experience, project management and mentoring skills. Main Duties:


  • Development of the commercial function of SYSTRA Ltd UK Engineering and the project commercial team
  • Develop open/trusting commercial relationships with key clients, partners and supply chain
  • Lead pre-contract commercial requirements of the business
  • Manage the post-contract project commercial team, engaging with clients and partners where issues require escalation
  • Liaise closely with the SYSTRA legal team on bids and projects
  • Monthly commercial review of major projects
  • Monthly commercial reporting to the Engineering Business Director
  • Stage-gate commercial reviews of all tenders
  • Support the bidding process including the negotiation of contract terms and conditions, NDAs, MOUs, partnering agreements, etc.
  • Setting of project commercial strategies
  • Manage sub-contract procurement and commercial administration
  • Management of internal SYSTRA ‘know your business partner’ process
  • Ensure adherence to SYSTRA commercial process; change management, risk management, etc
  • Maintain commercial risk register
  • Resolution of claims/disputes without compromising long term client relationships
  • Ensure appropriate commercial resources allocated to tenders and projects.
  • Routine admin work and in addition to the duties and responsibilities listed above, the job holder is required to perform other duties assigned by the manager from time to time. An important part of the role will include working with the resources across the project – from local resources to those based in the rest of the UK and Europe. This will include participating in the organisation of document control within different sites in the UK and overseas and ensuring that they are aligned with the project requirements and client expectations.


Experience Required


  • Extensive Commercial management experience in the pre-contract / bid development space
  • Relevant industry exposure in infrastructure, engineering or transport
  • Strong academic record with relevant industry body qualifications
  • Strong people management and development skills
  • Excellent client and stakeholder relationship management experience
