We are hiring a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Environmental and Sustainability Consultant to join our dedicated Environmental and Sustainability team based in our offices in York, Manchester or Birmingham (initially working from home). In addition to supporting the existing team in the environmental and sustainability management of High Speed 2 and other national and regionally important transport infrastructure projects, the successful candidate will help to develop SYSTRA’s capability in sustainability assessment fields such as (but not limited to) Social Impact Assessment, Carbon Assessment, Carbon Modelling, Climate Change and Resilience, BREEAM and CEEQUAL.


The Senior Environmental and Sustainability Consultant will develop and embed our corporate sustainability strategy to set the future direction of our approach through engagement with senior leadership and wider SYSTRA employees. The Senior Environmental and Sustainability Consultant will also be responsible for supporting work winning activities to secure future work for the business.


Main Duties:


  • Delivery of all the specified project environment and sustainability outcomes on time, within budget and to the client’s specifications and ensuring project requirements are fully met
  • Development of the sustainability workstream within the business, focussing on the topics such as a social impact assessment, carbon assessment and carbon modelling in new sectors with new clients to Systra.
  • Development and implementation of corporate sustainability strategy within the wider business
  • Technically sound design solutions are produced, including all associated reporting and cost estimating, to programme and within budget
  • Identifying and delivering new and innovative sustainability solutions and ensuring compliance with all relevant technical standards
  • Good relationships are maintained with all clients and external parties to enhance the reputation of the company
  • Programming of assessments, further site surveys, watching briefs and organising specialist assessments as and when required for renewals and improvement schemes and studies. Ensuring tasks are correctly priced and seeing through delivery on time and to budget.
  • Maintaining and constantly improving the environmental and sustainability assessment procedure to increase effective information transfer throughout the schemes delivery process.
  • Identification of environmental and sustainability issues relating to schemes + conception and implementation of appropriate mitigation.
  • Develop environment and sustainability awareness training materials and information campaigns to support the business strategy
  • Support projects in undertaking carbon or other sustainability assessments
  • An important part of the role will include working with the resources across the project – from local resources to others based at other design Technical Centres.


Experience Required:


  • Degree qualified within a relevant discipline
  • Chartered / IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment)
  • Significant Environment Management & Sustainability experience within an infrastructure industry.

  • Life cycle analysis experience
  • Carbon Modelling
